So Far Yet So Near
With two grown children – son
Phips is almost 18 and daughter Courtney is 20 – you would think the good old
days of family bonding were over for Hillary B. Smith (Nora). Not so, says the
actress. “We were just together for spring vacation,” she says of her children,
who are both away at school. “My daughter goes up to see Phips’ games, and he
travels down to see Courtney’s. We’re a normal, typical family – pretty close.”
Regardless of the circumstances, Smith and her husband, Philip, never go too
long without their kids. “We take trips,” she points out. “We go to see them at
school, and they bring their friends home.” So, does Smith still get sad when
her children leave to go back to school? “Of course,” she laughs, “I cry at the
drop of a hat. Everyone says it goes so fast – it does go fast! It really does.”
Still, the star wouldn’t want to go back to the days when the kids were still
shorter than her. “I’m so excited about what’s coming up,” she enthuses. “I
think the world today is a really interesting place. I wish I’d grown up as my
children have – I would love to be my kids!”
