Deep Sleep: Having endured
Nora’s six-month coma last year, Hillary B. Smith could write a book on the art
of playing comatose, but she wasn’t always the expert. “One night, I was
supposed to be unconscious when Troy and Lindsay had Nora under the mind-erasing
drug, and I heard this ‘Cut! Cut! I can’t work when she’s blowin’ spit bubbles.’
I’d fallen asleep!” she chuckles. “It was 3 o’clock in the morning, in my
defense.” It wasn’t until years later that she perfected her ability to breathe
through a respirator while playing Nora’s coma and thus negotiated a
much-anticipated new contract. “I think it was my respirator breathing that made
them realize how lucky they were to have me. I think my ability to be in the
coma was really what woke them up to my talent,” she jokes.
